As a result of improper digestion of food, a weakened digestive system there is some accumulation of undigested food, toxins or unwanted waste matter. Arthritis according to Ayurveda is mainly caused due to this excess of ama and imbalance of Agni and in turn due to this the poor digested toxins tend to accumulate in the body especially in the joints causing arthritis or osteoarthritis.
So for treating arthritis one has to stimulate the digestive fire (Agni) and lessen the ama in the body.
In Ayurveda it is classified into three categories of arthritis, namely vata, pitta, and kapha. For the physician or the ayurvedic consultant to treat this condition correctly it is very important to diagnose as to which is the exact type of arthritis one has.
Vata-type Air
In vata type the joints will become stiff and make crackling sound with migrating, throbbing and cutting type of pain. They become dry and are not swollen but painful. Movement is difficult, bone deformation is more likely to occur.
Pitta-type-Fire
In pitta-type the arthritis is characterized by inflammation swelling, fever or burning. The joint becomes swollen, is very painful even without movement, looks red and on touching feels hot. Feels better with cold applications and may be aggravated with heat.
Amlaki is for pitta type arthritis
Kapha-type-Water:
In kapha-type arthritis, the joints becomes stiff and swollen, but it feels cold and clammy rather than hot. Slight movements can actually relieve the pain more than aggravating the pain. Joint swelling, edema, dull, localized, or heaving pain and aching. Can be relieved by heat and aggravated by cold and damp weather. In this type person may have oily skin, chest congestion or even mucus in the stool.
Bibbitaki is for kapha-type arthritis
General Treatment of Arthritis
There can be an imbalance in either vata, pitta, kapha. It all depends on a person's lifestyle, diet pattern, and emotions. This particular dosha slows down agni (digestive fire), resulting in the accumulation of this toxin which is a sticky mucus by-product of improper digestion known as “ama”.
Then the Vata, the main active dosha, assimilates the ama into the digestive system and accumulates it in the joints, bony and muscle tissue which in turn gives rise to the stiff and painful joints which is the characteristic of arthritis.
Triffala: In the beginning when one does not know which type of arthritis he or she has then just take 1 teaspoon triphala at night with 1/2 to 1 cup warm water so as to try and eliminate ama through the colon and triffala will help in doing so.
Our efforts here in Ayurveda would be to remove the ama from the joints and bring it back to the colon and then to eliminate it as waste. To do this, we need to keep the colon clean. So we need to determine the type of arthritis and manage it with the recommended therapies for each specific type.
After that 1/2 to 1 teaspoon with warm water is to be given at bedtime.
We also recommend general techniques for increasing the intensity of the digestive fire (agni) in order to burn up the toxins that are accumulating in the body.
Such as we recommend a selection of foods and herbs.
First of all a detox diet for the detoxification of the body:
We recommend a three- to five-day detoxification diet is often prescribed. Vegetables, juices, spices and herbs are taken during the fast, which lasts until the body shows signs that the digestive fire is burning strong. These signs include a return of the appetite, a feeling of lightness and a clear coating to the tongue.
We use various herbal medicinal oils for application to the skin in order to help the body clear toxins, relieve pain and restore mobility.
Mahanarayan oil/taila and vishgarbha taila mproves flexibility, stiffness, muscle fatigue, and removes pain. It is mixed with sesame oil (1:1) and applied to the painful areas. This oil also breaks up blockages and begins to heal locally. After oil application, warm heat, yoga, bath, or mild exercise further improves this situation.
Narayana oil is good for muscle and joint pain, lower body circulation, and reversing imbalances caused by aging.
Avipattikar churna is good for the pitta-type of arthritis and rheumatism.
Many times heat therapy, steam and hot packs and many other local application procedures are given to the affected joints and areas.
The main therapy includes the use of herbs, spices and bitters or decoctions.
Treatment of Vata-type arthritis
Diet
In addition to the general treatment, Vata-type arthritis responds well to a three- to five-day detoxification diet and an anti-Vata diet which should be done after consultation with the physician only. This diet includes warm, heavy and moist foods that give one strength.

(Wrap 2 tablespoons of mustard seeds in a handkerchief or cheesecloth to make the bag.)

Precaution for persons severely debilitated, pregnant or elderly, fasting is not recommended. We recommend damp, heavy, moist or mucus forming foods were suggested to be avoided until the toxins cleared up.
For stiff joints certain ayurvedic oils for application are recommended such as Mahanarayan, Vishgarbha taila, clove and sesame seed oil traditionally used for relief of pain, inflammation or swelling; clear the toxins, and nourish tissues.
