Raised body temperature is known as fever. In medical terms it is called 'Pyrexia' and according to Ayurveda it is known as “jwar” and high fever as “Vishamjwar”- a “Mahavyadhi”. Many a times fever is a only a symptom of many diseases.
Characteristics :
A very common ailment that affects almost everyone at least once in their lifetime is fever. It is characterized by the rise in temperature of the body. Human body temperature is normally 98.6 F or 36 C in normal conditions. When there is a rise in it, it is known as fever. Fever is measured by an instrument known as thermometer. The minimum body temperature occurs between 2 AM and 7 AM and the maximum occurs between 4 PM and 6 PM of the day.
- In very hot weather, the body temperature may rise a little more.
- Usually a rise in temperature of a degree or more is caused by some form of infection.
Signs & Symptoms :
This can be accompanied by other common symptoms like body ache, sore throat,head ache, burning eyes, coated tongue, feeling of heaviness, excess saliva production, nausea, loss of appetite, and so on.
- A temperature over 37.4° C or 99.4° F may be considered as fever.
- The person's face will probably be flushed, the eyes may be glazed, the body hot to the touch. The person may either feel hot or cold depending on the rise and fall of temperature.
- When the temperature is dropping, the body often sweats profusel.
Depending on the type of fever, the other symptoms like vomiting, chills may develop. External injury, changing climatic conditions, strain, throat or any other infection, any poisoning or insect bite can cause fever. Even on vaccination, we tend to get fever. There are many kinds of fevers: jaundice, malaria, typhoid, dengue, and so on.
One may not visit a doctor for a simple fever; however, would take a pill to bring it under control. Fever is generally not considered as an ailment, but a signal to the brain stating that something is not correct with our body. There is no particular treatment to this ailment. There are medicines available to reduce the body temperature back to normal, and also the other symptoms raised with it.
Some Diet Tips for Fever :-
- Solid foods should be replaced by a liquid diet. Green vegetables and fruits are recommended in the post-recovery stage.
- If a mild laxative is administered to the patient before an attack comes on, its virulence is modified. Daily activities should be increased only gradually.
Home Remedies for treatment of fever : Of course doctor’s consultation is a must to know the exact diagnosis on the type of the fever especially in cases of children, as they may develop convulsions. However some simple remedies are enumerated below, which can be used in mild cases.
- Tulsi (Holy Basil) is a well-known home remedy useful in all types of fevers like viral, bacterial or malarial. A decoction can be prepared by adding 10gm of fresh leaves and 2gm of black pepper powder to 50ml of water. This can be taken 3 times a day. It is a good remedy for fevers.
- Neem Juice of tender fresh leaves of neem is also effective in fevers. 1 teaspoonful of the juice well mixed in 2 spoons of honey should be taken twice a day. It works both as curative as well as preventive.
- The patient can drink lots of hot liquids like vegetable soups, water, barley water, and porridge that can be easily digested.
- He should avoid oily food, junk food, or rich food that cannot be easily digested.
- Cow milk can be given to the patient, as it is easily digestible.
- Rest is a must. It is better to cover blanket over the patient so that he sweats. Sweating brings down the fever.
- Mash a small piece of ginger, boil with water and jaggery. After straining the mixture well, you can drink that liquid.
- You can take a mixture of 10-15 ml juice of Tulsi (holy basil) and 2-3 gm powder of black pepper so as to bring down the intensity of fever. Holy basil has proved to be protective, curative and preventive for malarial fevers also many a times. To ward off the danger of malarial fever or high fevers such as dengue, chikungunya fever, viral fever even tea can be prepared and served to the patient by mixing and boiling above mentioned ingredients - it will reduce severity of malarial and all types of fevers curing ailments naturally will not give you any side-effects or problem
Ayurvedic Remedies :
- Mix 125 mg each of Godanti Bhasma, Shuddha Sphatika, and of Karanja. Now prepare six pills out of the above mixture and two pills to be taken at an interval of 2 hours before expected attack.
- Amrutharishta, an oral liquid in a dose of 15ml thrice a day with equal quantity of water is also useful.
- Godanti Mishran 1 to 2 tablets thrice daily reduces fever and pain.
- Anand Bhairav Ras and Tribhuvan Kirti Ras are also very effective in fever but should be taken under the supervision of an Ayurvedic physician.
- Mixture of 125 mg of Mahajwara ankush Rasa and 240 mg of Shuddha Sphatika can be taken with juice of tulsi leaves thrice daily.
- Sudarshana Ghana Vati 2 tablets thrice a day with black tea should be taken for 7 day.
The above medicines are for the initial attacks of high fevers; when the attacks are intermittent, the following medicines would be more useful

Here the kutaki Picrorhiza kurroa (Pk), a known hepatoprotective plant, was studied in experimental and clinical situations and thus gives protective properties to the liver also which really becomes very weak during fevers. Also kachka (casesalpinia bonducella) has antiinflamatory anthelmintic properties and is liver tonic. Regarding the Karmas (pharmacological actions) Yavtikta (Andrographis paniculata) kalmegha it has been Deepan (stomachic), Yakriduttajak (liver stimulant), Pittasrak and Pittarechak (choleretic and cholagogues), Krimighna (wormicidal), Swedajanam (diphoretic), Jwaraghna (antipyretic) like actions and is also used as a Katu Paustik (bitter tonic).
Bhavprakaash described its properties as a laxative and bitter; it overcomes the Sanmpat type of fever, difficulty in breathing Kapha-Pitta variation of blood, cough, oedema and wormsand thus not only lowers the high fevers but restores sluggish liver functions and cleanses the liver from toxins deposited by alcohol and drugs
Dose : two tablets every three hours. at the time of epidemic of malaria, 2 tablets to be taken daily. 2 tablets daily should be continued for 3 weeks after reaching normal temperature or as advised by the physician.
